Communities and Faiths Series - JLC Reception

30th March 2023

Alderman and Sheriff Alastair King DL celebrated the Jewish contribution to the City of London with the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) at the Old Bailey Grand Hall. The event was hosted by Sheriff King and the City of London Corporation, and sponsored by Regal London.

This was the first in the series of Alderman and Sheriff King’s Communities and Faiths events.

The Jewish Leadership Council represents many Jewish organisations in the UK, including synagogues, care organisations, education charities, regional Representative Councils and has close association with the Board of Deputies of British Jews. The JLC ensures that the UK Jewish community thrives, strengthening and supporting leadership across the community.

There were over 200 guests, including peers, MPs, Aldermen and Councillors, Rabbis, community leaders and business people. We heard insightful speeches from the former Lord Mayor of City of London, Sir Michael Bear, the Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Marvis, Nickie Aiken MP and Jonathan Seal of Regal London.

JLC Chair, Keith Black, spoke about how the Jewish people played and continue to play a vital role in the City at all levels, from business and law, to shop keepers and academics. He also noted how Britain’s oldest synagogue, Bevis Marks, takes pride of place in the City. It was a great pleasure to have the Rabbi of Bevis Marks, Rabbi Shalom Morris, with us on that evening.

Sheriff King noted that “It was a great pleasure to be able to host a wonderful event jointly with the Jewish Leadership Council. The contribution of the Jewish Communities to the City of London has been immense over the centuries. It was a delight to see so many remarkable people marking this contribution”.
