IoD Japan-UK Symposium

24th April 2023

As Chair of IoD London Region, Alderman and Sheriff Alastair King DL had the pleasure of helping to host and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the historic Iwakura Mission at the Japan-UK Symposium, run by the Institute of Directors (IoD) International Trade Group (Japan Special Interest Group).

The Iwakura Mission stayed in Britain for 122 days and was the most significant of the

Japanese missions sent to the West in 1873. It was the first Japanese mission designed according to Western diplomatic principles. The 150th Anniversary provides an ideal opportunity to raise relations, focused on carrying out trade and realising new businesses

opportunities between Japan and the UK.

This event brought together professions that are considering business opportunities between the UK and Japan, and discussed how partnering can open opportunities in other countries. Sheriff King was pleased to connect with delegates and companies promoting business between Japan and the UK and developing trading opportunities between the nations.

The IoD Japan-UK Symposium was supported by: Embassy of Japan, Department of International Trade, Japan External Trade Organisation, Japan House London, British Japanese All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), Japan Society, Japan Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Japan Foundation, Japan Association in the UK, Rotary Club of London, Japan Exchange Group and techUK.
